      Cim i tomba en Tossa de Mar

      The origen of the "Cim i tomba" dish is closely linked to the long fishing tradition of Tossa de Mar. Years ago, when the fishing industry relied on sails and oars, a day's work would mean many hours out at sea. In order to ensure themselves a decent meal whilst out working, the fishermen from Tossa would take aboard a small stove, coal, a mortar and a deep pot, as well as a chest of ingredients such as potatoes, onions, garlic cloves, tomatoes, peppers, olive oil and spices (salt, pepper, saffron). When it was time to eat the fishermen would throw the chopped onions, sliced potatoes, peppers, chopped tomatoes and garlic cloves into the pot, followed by the fish that they would later not be able to sell (ray, pez rubio/streaked gurnard, pez arania/weeverfish, monkfish, etc), adding to that a good pour of oil, and a covering of water. Whilst this was boiling they would prepare a light alioli with generous proportions of oil and when the pot was almost boiling, add the alioli to the fish and let the mixture simmer for 2 to 5 minutes. The result was a very simple and succulent dish of fresh fish and vegetables. September is Cim i tomba month in the beautiful seaside town of Tossa de Mar! We will have a leisurely walk (1h30 mins approx) through the pretty town before lunch, and then settle down to some typical Tossenca cuisine (cim i tomba for those that wish) in a lovely restaurant set in the city walls. The menu: Entrantes A eligir un plato entre - Ensaladas (aguacate, queso brie y vinagreta de frutos secos / pimientos asados, tomate, cebolla de Figueres y atun / Tomate, mozzarella y albahaca fresca / clasica ensalada verde) / Coctel de gambas / Gazpacho / Mejillones al vapor / Mejillones a la marinera / Pescadito frito / Tagliatelle "Genovese" / Terrina de marisco Plato principal A eligir un plato entre: - Cim i tomba / Paella marinera / Paella mixta / Paella de verduras / Fideua con frutos de mar / Arroz de paraguero / Merluzita al horno con patatas, cebollas y tomatitos / Bacalao con samfaina / Filete de cerdo con guarnicion (salsa pimienta o roquefort) / Magret de pato al Oporto sobre rissotto Postres A eligir un plato entre : - Pastel con chocolate caliente / helados varios / Crema catalana Vino blanco, rosado o tinto Cafe NO incluido. Transport, where possible, will be by car. Places in the cars will be organised on a first come, first served basis. As people with cars sign up, more spaces will become available. Drivers should state "car + how many available spaces" in their RSVP. Please organise the cost of car travel with your driver. Should there not be enough cars for everyone, those on the waiting list are invited to take the sarfa bus service that leaves from Estacion de Nord at 11h30 arriving at 12h50 (cost 10 euros each way). The cars will arrive to coincide with the arrival of the bus service. Hope to see you there!!!
